Transitions-A Special Art Project Marking the 70th Anniversary of the Mass Immigration of Iraqi Jews

Going on now

Curator: Orly Baher Levy

On March 9, 2020, exactly 70 years after the Waiver of Citizenship Law (Tasqit) was promulgated, the artist, Rubi Bakal, started painting his monumental work Transitions. Born to parents who came from Baghdad and grew up in a transit camp, Bakal created a personal and retrospective interpretation of the immigration and absorption experience in Israel. This one-time work, which took shape gradually on the walls of the gallery, depicts the absorption and integration process that the members of his family underwent, a process that had also an impact on the following generations.

The work Transitions, which will be removed from the walls of the gallery after the exhibition closes, enables visitors to observe the various transitions, 70 and more years after the establishment of the State of Israel. They include physical transitions made by Jews from their country of birth to their historical homeland, transitions of time, and transitions between generations.
